At 32 years old, I turned to God in a time of extreme crisis. Crisis aside, it was a scary time for me, because there was so much I didn't know about God. Except for weddings and funerals, I hadn't been to a church service in my adult life. Not once. I wasn't sure where to start or what to do. And, perhaps most embarrassing of all, I knew painfully little about God. My knowledge of the bible was probably on the level of what they teach in a Sunday School class for 6-year-olds. Although I may be underestimating the 6-year-olds.
To help you understand just how elementary my understanding of the Bible was, I can sum it up in a few short sentences. I knew that God made the world. It took him about a week. He created Adam and Eve. Somebody ate an apple, though I didn't know why that was important. A guy named Noah built an ark and took some animals boating. At some point, Jesus, the Son of God, was sent to spread God's word. He was crucified and came back to life a few days later. If you know anything more than that, you're already ahead of where I was the day I turned to God.
So anyway, I told a minister friend of mine I needed tutoring. I needed a class in Remedial Christianity 101. And while he did try to help me figure things out, my best understanding came from reading book after book - most of which weren't even intended to help understand Christianity. I also began going to church three times each week, absorbing every bit of information I could gleen from the sermons. And it's been working. I'm learning more and more about the Bible, about Jesus Christ and about Christianity.
One thing I do know is that I am not alone. I know there is at least one other person out there, nervously coming back to God, struggling to understand, wanting to learn, needing to grow. Someone who probably wishes they could get past the embarrassment of attending a Sunday School class for 6-year-olds. I don't know how many people are in that situation. There may only be one. But if it's you, I hope that the contents of this little web site help you start to fill in those knowledge gaps that you need filled in.
